For a while I cleaned it without conviction and pretended nothing had happened, hoping the guests wouldn’t notice. But after some painfully honest reactions, I realized it was time to move up a gear.

I wasn’t ready to replace the seat yet, so I immersed myself in the world of home cleaning tips. And surprisingly, some worked really, really well.

Real innovation? A mixture of baking soda and vinegar.

I whipped it until thick, spread it over the stains and let it sit for 15 minutes.

I then scrubbed vigorously with an old toothbrush, and years of dirt disappeared. Were there still a few stains left?

This is where the magic eraser came in. I was honestly amazed at how quickly the problem resolved, almost embarrassing at how simple it turned out.

For deeper, more stubborn discoloration, hydrogen peroxide did the trick.

I dipped a few sheets of absorbent paper in the product, placed them on the stains and left them on for an hour. No damage, no need to rub; I just removed the yellow. (Little advice: never mix peroxide and vinegar; it’s dangerous.)

Meanwhile, I attacked the inside of the bowl with a pumice stone and soaked it overnight with Borax, which made the mineral stains magically disappear
