⭐ Butter Cookies Recipe

Classic, Buttery, and Melt-in-Your-Mouth Delicious

These traditional butter cookies are soft, tender, and wonderfully rich. With just a few simple ingredients, you get a cookie that pairs perfectly with tea, coffee, or a holiday cookie tray. They hold their shape beautifully and can be piped, rolled, or cut into shapes.

🧈 Ingredients

  • 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (or ½ tsp vanilla + ½ tsp almond extract)
  • 2 1/4 cups (280 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Optional decorations:

  • Melted chocolate
  • Sprinkles
  • Powdered sugar
  • Jam (for thumbprint style)

🥣 Instructions

1. Cream the butter and sugar

In a large bowl, beat softened butter and granulated sugar with a mixer for 2–3 minutes until light, pale, and fluffy.

2. Add egg and vanilla

Mix in the egg and vanilla extract until fully combined.

3. Add dry ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together:

  • Flour
  • Baking powder
  • Salt

Add the dry mixture to the butter mixture and mix just until a soft dough forms.
Do not overmix.

Chill for 20–30 minutes if rolling or piping cookies.
(This helps the cookies keep their shape while baking.)

🍪 Shape the Cookies

Choose your favorite method:

A) Piped Butter Cookies (Danish style)

  • Transfer dough into a piping bag with a star tip.
  • Pipe swirls, circles, or S-shapes onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.

B) Roll and Cut

  • Roll the dough to 1/4 inch thickness.
  • Cut with cookie cutters.

C) Drop Cookies

  • Scoop 1 tbsp dough, roll into balls, and flatten gently.

🔥 5. Bake

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.
  • Let cool on the tray for 5 minutes, then transfer to a rack.

🍫 Optional Finishing Touches

  • Dip half the cookie in melted chocolate and add sprinkles.
  • Dust with powdered sugar.
  • Press the center before baking and fill with jam after cooling.

💡 Tips for Perfect Butter Cookies

  • Use real butter, not margarine.
  • Do not melt the butter — it should be soft but still hold shape.
  • Piping too thick? Add 1–2 tbsp milk to soften the dough.
  • For extra flavor, add ½ tsp almond extract.
