🍌🍾 Say Goodbye to Fruit Flies with This Easy DIY Trap
All You Need Is a 2-Liter Bottle, Sugar, Vinegar & a Banana Peel!
Tired of pesky fruit flies buzzing around your kitchen or garden? Here’s a simple, inexpensive, and chemical-free solution you can make at home using items you probably already have in your pantry.
🧪 Ingredients:
- 1 empty 2-liter plastic bottle
- ¾ to 1 cup of sugar
- ¾ to 1 cup of vinegar (any type works, even cheap white vinegar)
- 1 banana peel
- Warm water (to fill halfway)
🧰 Instructions:
1. Prepare the Bottle
- Rinse the bottle thoroughly.
- Cut the top third of the bottle off (right where it starts to curve inward toward the neck).
2. Mix the Trap Solution
- In the bottom half of the bottle, combine:
- ¾–1 cup sugar
- ¾–1 cup vinegar
- The peel from one banana
- Fill halfway with warm water and stir to dissolve the sugar.
3. Assemble the Trap
- Invert the top part of the bottle (like a funnel) and place it into the bottom half — neck facing down.
- Make sure the funnel doesn’t touch the liquid. Tape or staple the edges if necessary to hold it in place.
4. Place the Trap
- Set the bottle near fruit bowls, trash bins, compost areas, or anywhere you’ve seen flies or gnats.
🐝 How It Works:
- The sugar and banana attract the flies with their sweet scent.
- The vinegar adds a fermented smell they love but also acts as a mild preservative.
- Once inside the bottle, the flies have trouble escaping and eventually drown in the solution.
🧼 Bonus Tip:
Change the trap every 5–7 days or when it gets full. You can rinse and reuse the same bottle.
